Leila is in heat!

Leila came into heat a few days ago so she and Jet will be breeding very soon! Female dogs are usually ready to breed around the 12th-16th day after they first start bleeding. I do progesterone testing on my females to get the best idea when she is ovulating. At about 24 days after she is bred, I go to the vet to get an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. The pregnancy lasts 9 weeks or 63 days from the first breeding. The girls are usually bred two times, two days apart, to get the best chance of a pregnancy. At about 58 days gestation, I go to the vet for an xray to see how many babies she is carrying. This gives me a good idea of when the mama is done delivering so that I don't worry that she might have a pup or two left inside.
Leila was a wonderful mama with her first litter! She had a quiet, fast first labor, also. Many dogs are very restless, nesting, and panting for a few to several hours before the actual pushing phase of labor begins. Not Leila...she was just quiet that day and did not eat her breakfast. We also watch for the girl's temperature to drop to around 98 degrees and stay there to let us know that she is getting close to delivery. The normal temperature for a dog is 100-102 degrees.
I will post when Leila has been bred and then it is time to wait for the ultrasound!
